The WDVE show last night was absolutely fantastic! It has been a long time since I was able to get out to a full-band-electric show and after last night I took a solemn vow to get out more often! "Safe At Home" blew me away live - I could have listened to Joe and Danny exchange guitar solos all night long! Johnny's electric guitar work on "The Shape I'm In" was spellbinding and he is without question the heir apparent to the Grushecky legacy - I can't wait to see where this kid is when he's 25! And, Joffo's drum solos changed my respiratory and heart rhythms (for the better!) Thanks for a great night of music! You guys are the best. . . ."Juniors Bar where the band is playing just for me. . ."

Youngstown Vindicator, December 14, 2006 Rocker Grushecky is one of a dying breed The Pittsburgh native's style is in the mode of Springsteen and Seger. By JOHN BENSON VINDICATOR CORRESPONDENT They just don't make rock 'n' rollers like Joe Grushecky anymore. Cut from the blue-collar shot-and-a-beer cloth of everyday living, the Pittsburgh native is a different and dying breed. "It's the last of the Mohicans, baby," laughed Grushecky, calling from his Steel City home. "There's a lot of rock bands but there's not a lot of rock 'n' roll bands, you know what I'm saying. It still has some of that swang to it. It's got skank and swang." He added, "I think every generation has different rhythms. The '40s guys had that swing thing, and '50s rockabilly and Elvis [Presley] had a little bit different rhythm, and in the '60s, it expanded a lot. I think we're sort of falling in that tradition. We like to think of ourselves as a straight line back to the founding fathers." A writer of documentaries in the form of songs covering everyman tales much in the same fashion as Bob Seger, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, Grushecky recently added another chapter to the collection. His latest effort is "A Good Life," which he explains is "one of those records that takes a little bit of living to write. It has the lived-in feel to me." Defining success Recording since the late '70s, Grushecky has flirted with national attention but never for one reason or another was able to break on through to bigger things. With a dozen albums under his belt, the guitarist feels as though success is a subjective word that truly describes his career. "It is what it is and it's a waste of your time being bitter about anything," Grushecky said. "I'll tell you what, I felt like I was successful when I put out my first record. Everything since then has been frosting on the cake. I've been produced by two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers [Bruce Springsteen and Booker T. and the MGs guitarist Steve Cropper]. I've played with some of the best people in the music business. People who I respect and admire know who I am, and I've gotten to play all over the world." Specifically, Springsteen has played a large role in Grushecky's career, producing or performing alongside his friend on many album projects. This includes "A Good Life," with the New Jersey icon appearing on the title track, and the heavy rocker "A Code of Silence." Friends for decades, the two in many ways make a perfect pair. A lot in common "We have a lot of the same influences and he was listening to the same songs back on the Jersey shore when he was growing up that I was playing here in Pittsburgh," Grushecky said. "We have a lot of reference points similar working-class backgrounds and we were close in those regards, and you know how you meet people, strike it off and become friends. Fortunately for me, it was Bruce Springsteen, so we've had a good working relationship." Grushecky and his backing band The Houserockers make a return visit to Mahoning County for a Friday show at The Cellar. As far as memories of Youngstown are concerned, he still vividly remembers watching obscure CBGB band Mink DeVille playing at the Tomorrow Club in August of 1977 with then largely unknown AC/DC as opener. "It was just like balls to the wall," said Grushecky. Fans attending Grushecky's upcoming show can expect relatively the same vibe. Said Grushecky, "We're one of the world's greatest rock 'n' roll bands."
