Some thoughts on some of the current topics...I too have a hard time with the Stones circa the last 15 years or so. I too understand their place in rock and roll history but they are almost cartoon charcters to me now--parodies of themselves. I think they are held to a higher standard rightfully so when you sell $400 tickets for your show but again, it's not about hate, i just think they aren't very good anymore. A quick comparison would be Roger Daltrey's voice to Mick's in 2007---in my opinion, it's not even close. As far as Prince goes...never have been a fan so my opinion probably doesn't carry much weight. He can play guitar but his weirdness quotient is way too out of whack for me. I still take pride in how Bruce knocked him and Micheal Jackson out of the water in 84/85 when the media annointed those two. And seeing a band in a bar? It is THE VERY BEST. Gimme the sweat of a crowded pub anyday. My best moments in rock and roll are at The Stone Pony and places like it. Seeing Joe, Southside, or even Bruce there is second to none. I often wonder what it would had been like to see Stevie Ray in Austin when he was first starting out that way...had to be magical. And a message to Joe...you guys need a gig at the House of Blues in Cleveland. What a great facility. Just imagine it like PNC Park. Old-time feel but with great sound and vibe.

Well I have to say that after seeing the Stones numerous times, I really had a great time at their stadium show here in Pittsburgh. I don't think that their approach to these stadium extravaganzas differ much from other bands who do the same. Some nights are better than others. Since they are my favorites I would rather see them than most others although I have walked out of a couple of their shows and feel that they are way overpriced.
I can't get past my brush with Prince. We were playing one night at Fat City and word came that he was going to come to the club to perform. We had to cut our set, everyone was thrown out and had to play like $40.00 bucks to get back in. He shows up about 2AM for about a ten minute viewing peering over the balcony at the peasants down below. His bodyguards left with a sack of money laughing all the way to the bank. What a rip. Felt like I needed a bath when I got home. I know judge the art not the artist but in this case I can't.
The best music is in the bars anyway. That's where guys are playing because they love to do it.

The Foo Fighters have covered a Prince song so I think it may just be a mutual affection for each others work.

J&K; have you seen the Stones in the past 6 or 7 years live? A good friend of mine got me a ticket in the 6th row at the Arena a few years back and while it was ok I just can't get past the Las Vegas feel of the show or the fact that Mick can't sing anymore. It was hard for me being a long time Stones fan and I'm not slamming what they have meant to music. But for a band that incorporated blues into rock and did all the kinds of things they did in the past (Star, Star comes to mind) I felt like they walked through their performance. And I can't stand hearing their songs for commercials it annoys me. This is just my opinion it's ok if it doesn't bother you. I need an artist to still be passionate about their craft, especially their live performances or I can't bear to watch.

On a Joe G note, he has a gig in March at the Beach House in Finleyville PA. I have not personally been there yet but some friends of mine have and like it very much. There is a nice stage, dance floor (for Tom and Becky!), tables chairs and a bar area. It is on Route 88 right next door to Mineral Beach Pool. I'll give directions if needed closer to the gig so mark your calanders.

Dave, try to stay on track and discuss Joe G. We all know what you think of the Clarks.

I personally am a Clarks fan, but if it's any consolation to you, the Clarks are almost totally unknown outside of the Pittsburgh area. I've lived in central Virginia and now in central Florida and I've NEVER heard a Clarks song on the radio, though they have performed both here and in central Virginia several times.

Code of Silence is back as DVE's most played song.

I thought Prince was very good and did as good as you could possibly do with a short set in an overhyped environment.The man is an excellent guitarist and "Purple Rain" couldn't have been timed better.As for the Stones last year-I thought they were OK.It wasn't their finest hour but I didn't think they fell on their faces either.

I wasn't crazy about Prince, but that's probably because I'm a fan of real rock and roll music. Jeff and Karen you guys are right, last year wasn't the Stones best performance, but it wasn't bad. I loved it. The Stones are a real rock band...a dirty, bluesy, and sometimes sloppy rock band-at least they're real. But most of the bands I like are like that. Prince is a sideshow geek.

Jeff&Karen;
We both thought Prince did a great job at the halftime show. We're also not big fans of medleys (please Joe, don't EVER do a medley of your great songs!)however, the mix of songs he did was pretty cool! I'm not sure how the Foo Fighters song (The Best Of You) found it's way into the mix though?! I still don't know why everybody rips on the Stones halftime performance from last year though. Was it their best, no. Was it "embarrasing", absolutely not! I guess I'll take a mediocre Stones performance over most of the mainstream music of today anytime. Now, where do we start the petition to get Joe G and the Houserockers scheduled for NEXT Year when the Steelers get back to the "Big Game"? (I don't think this website is officially sponsored by the NFL so we can't say Super Bowl!)

I just say it like it is!!!!! Some of the worst songs of all time. "Penny on the Floor" and that other classic "Save the Snowman" I heard better lyrics on "New Zoo Review" when I was little.
