Shel
thanks for all the input from everybody

some things I'll work on...

1) put a journal on the website...will try to get it on as soon as I have the time, it's a great suggestion

2) on brick alley radio, FYI you can also listen to it via iTunes. I can put instructions on the brick alley radio website. I've been toying with the idea of streaming music directly from this website, similar to the Hard Rock DVD, so that you don't need to download another client.

thanks again keep the suggestions coming

p.s. I know that Joe is working on the attic collection, so I can't speak for him but expect we'll see it available sometime soon. Last I heard I think it was being mastered. A bunch of those tunes are on brick alley, I think that a song called "let it slide" is especially great, in addition to a few others that I personally had never heard before.

FYI - Biddlefest XVI will be Sept 17th. This is an annual event designed to raise money for the beloved Serbian Club in Biddle. Proceeds from this event helps buy heating oil, and pay off some of the Club's bills. If you're in the area, stop in and have a few cold ones!

Shel –

I have purchased the Live in Spain CD. Had a little trouble with the download at first but in the end all worked out well. I got it mainly to add to my Houserocker collection. The quality is fine but like Ed below, I am much more interested in the “Attic Collection” material. I am always “hungry” for new material from Joe – even if it is old material presented in a new way.

I listen to Brick Alley Radio 3-4 nights a week at work from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. (after the office empties out). I absolutely love it and have had other folks comment positively on the variety of artists and selections. A few of my colleagues have become “Houserocker Converts” from listening to the station.

The DVD preview is also great! I can’t wait to purchase it – finally a professional video of the band! I have a lot of “homemade videos but they’re dark, distorted, and disappointing. This DVD will be watched on a regular basis and it is great to be able to preview it via this website.

Finally, I like Mark’s suggestion to create different “threads” in the Guestbook to better focus discussions and give folks the option of ignoring or opting out of topics that are not of interest.

Keep up the great work – the website continues to be a fun and informative connection to my favorite band!

Shel: In response to your questions...

1. The Live in Spain CD: Personally, I would much prefer to purchase this already recorded. If available, I would send in a money order and have it shipped to me. I am not computer illiterate, but am not comfortable with downloading stuff online. My child has hosed up our computer more than once downloading music. I shy away from it for this reason.

2. Brick Alley Radio. Again, the download thing. To be able to listen, one must download the Live 365 player. I love Pittsburgh music, have been a fan of Joe since 1979 as well as many other Pgh musicians whose music is available through the Live 365 system. I am not comfortable with downloading stuff onto my PC and therefore do not have the Live 365 player.

3. DVD video snippet: I have watched this snippet. Yes, it is downloaded to be able to watch it, but doesn't require downloading additional software. I'm happy it will be available to purchase via US postal service rather than over the internet.

I sincerely hope that the 'attic' collection will be available via US postal service. This is one I am really looking forward to. I already have many of Joe's later live CDs that were available through the tree network on this website. Don't really feel that the live in Spain CD offers anything new.

Even though I live too far away to have made any shows in the last 10 years, I shy away from downloading any of the music and would order whatever is available through the mail.
Hope this helps you understand at least how one fan feels.

Shel...I play Brick Alley Radio constantly. If nothing else, let's find a way to keep that going. The snippet from the HRC is GREAT...if nothing else, it whets the appetite for the official release. I haven't tried downloading the Spain DVD, I don't really do much downloading, but I'll probably end up buying it. I think you're doing a kickass job on this site...One suggestion I have is maybe adding a page for threads that may be off the topic of music. Kinda like Springsteen's site, there's a page set up if you want to talk about live shows, another if you want to trade or sell tix, another one that talks about the new record, and another that is general "discussion." That would probably work well here, and would alleviate some of the griping from people who don't care to read that stuff (although my guess is that they'd join the discussion anyway). Just a thought.

non-political post...

hey, a few questions for the group:

1) has anybody downloaded the live in spain CD? It took a fair amount of work to get it ready etc to be able to download & sell on the site. Just curious. It seems like there has been limited interest in it.

2) is anybody listening to Brick Alley Radio? I am not making any money at this, if anything I lose money by keeping it going. There is a lot of Joe/HR stuff there that you can't find on a disk. I'd like to feel that it is a worthwhile effort.

3) has anybody checked out the video snippet from the Hard Rock? I think Steve is doing a great job with the DVD.

sometimes I wonder if these efforts are making any difference at all...

as far as the political messages go, I really don't personally care much, I think it adds a little spice to the guestbook. You can always choose to ignore them if it bothers you I guess. Just wish at times we could be as constructive in getting a little publicity for the band as we are at taking shots at politicians...

I don't think my post was a global warming diatribe.

Art is subjective based on those who experience it. My experience may be different from yours. There is plenty of room for both.

I've often thought of developing a website where the other implications of the music could be discussed further.

To compare 1000's of deaths and personal destruction to hot dogs, made me stop reading your post.

Anyone who thing the music that brought us here isn't political, social, emotional, and controversial is listening in a different way than I am.

I think it's quite laughable...some of these critics who seem to think it's galling that someone would post something that's a bit "off topic." Sad thing is, I have NEVER seen some of these people post here before...about "the music" or otherwise. Yet they come out of the woodwork when there is a point made that they are in disagreement with. I bet if someone would have posted "Bush is doing a great job handling this whole hurricane thing" we wouldn't have heard a peep out of this "H. Joseph" character or this other dude..."Mark is Brain Damaged." (Now THAT was a good one that gave me my best laugh of the week.

Why come here to do it? Because one can’t really separate politics from the music of great artists like Joe Grushecky.

For instance. . .if you check out Bruce Springsteen’s website, you’ll find 69,454 posts under “Politics and Current Events”. Tom Petty’s website has 1725 posts under “Hurricane Katrina”, 240 posts under “Justice Rehnquist” and 413 posts under “Iraq”. Paul McCartney’s website has 1972 posts under “Cosmically Conscious” (although a large number of McCartney’s posts are related to vegetarian alternatives so I am not sure I would post anything about “frying hot dogs in a pan”.

Many years ago, I asked Joe why he didn’t get more airplay on local radio stations. His response was that the music was too “intelligent” for B-94!

I come here to discuss issues precisely because of the music – Joe’s music. In times of turmoil, the music is there to challenge me. In times of despair, the music is there to offer me hope. In times of joy, the music is there to help me celebrate. And when I just want to kick back, crack open a beer, and turn up the volume, the music is there as well!

Somewhere along the line all of us, visiting this website, have connected with Joe’s music. For many of us, it is impossible to compartmentalize “the music” from the other aspects of our lives whether that be relationships, children, jobs, good times, bad times and. . . . .yes, even politics.
