Keith--thanks for the info on the Clash tune. It's great and i too think Joe should think about adding this to the live set. It does shine a light on the versatility and the guitar work is amazing. I hope Joe can give us some more details on the musicians used on the track. On a side note--Shel, is there a way to make longer posts on the site without having to break them up like Keith had to do.Sometimes a longer post is crucial as this one was.

Wonder if the band would cover some old Floyd tunes. Just wondering.

THANKS, KEITH FOR THE HEADS-UP ON JOE'S AWESOME VERSION OF "THE MAG 7". YOU'RE RIGHT, IT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH THE WORK TO FIND IT AND IT IS DEFINITELY AN UNEXPECTED GEM. BEING A BIG FAN OF THE CLASH, I NEVER THOUGHT SOMEBODY COULD ACTUALLY DO A BETTER VERSION OF ONE OF THEIR SONGS, BUT LEAVE IT TO JOE AND THE BOYS TO PROVE ME WRONG. I ALWAYS LIKED JOE'S "BRAND NEW CADILLAC" WHICH WAS A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE HOUSEROCKERS MUSICAL STYLE, BUT THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. YES, THE BAND SHOULD BE DOING THIS LIVE, ITHINK IT WOULD REALLY TURN SOME HEADS. I'D STILL LOVE TO HEAR THE BOYS TRY THEIR HAND AT MY FAVORITE CLASH SONG, "DEATH OR GLORY", (FROM LONDON CALLING) I THINK THEY'D DO A KILLER JOB ON THAT!

I heard a GREAT (new?) Joe song
and it got me so fired up that I wrote a HUGE post about it. All apologies in advance -- here we go:

PART 1: Pardon me if I’m a year or so late on this – the toddlers occasionally keep me away from the message board for stretches at a time. But have you guys all heard Joe & the Houserockers’ earth-rattling, butt-shaking, almost unimaginably fierce’n’funky version of the Clash’s song The Magnificent Seven? As I said, this may be old news, since the track was apparently recorded back in 2004. But it was news to me. Friends in Chicago told my wife about a web site chronicling rock writer-tech wiz Jimmy Guterman’s efforts to release a tribute to the Clash’s Sandinista record. Jimmy is a big Joe fan; he apparently asked Joe to contribute a track; and Guterman’s web site has an mp3 of the result – the Houserockers’ take on my favorite Clash song of all time, Mag 7. If you’ve never heard the Clash’s Magnificent Seven – first, go buy a Clash hits disc, today. But second, what you need to know right this instant was that this song represented an unbelievably ballsy move at the time – here were these first-generation British punks doing NYC hip-hop (circa ’81), for crying out loud. And it worked! You’ve never heard such a funny, angry, cautionary tale about the working life – with such a righteous groove.

PART 2: Naturally, given how much of a long-shot the original was – and how much I love it – I didn’t think anyone could cover it well. Shame on me for underestimating the Houserockers. In my mind, this is a major, major musical milestone for this band – every bit as much of a triumph as Long Way to Go, if not even bigger. They maintain the feel and funky spirit of the original, add in the Houserocker grit we all know and love … and then take it somewhere that neither the Clash nor the Houserockers have ever been before. Just listen to it: First, Joe absolutely nails the vocals – he sounds as if those are his own words, not Joe Strummer’s, that he’s rapping. The guitar work is phenomenal, especially during an extended, combustive flurry at the end. There is some supremely hip harmonica work nudging things along, and then there’s the kicker – some kind of spooky, electric piano-vibes-keyboards thing that keeps floating by.
