First time I saw The HR's was at the old "El Dorado" in Greensburg. I remember the owner, and old man (Herman??), complaining that the boys "were too loud". I told the old fellow, "Hey, it's rock and roll, and look how many people are here to see them"! Circa 1981

Michael Stanley is the Donnie Iris of Cleveland (one of my friends told me this recently). I don't mean it in a bad way but in terms of popularity. MSB and the ICHR were two very different styles of music, no comparison really. I saw Michael Stanley recently (he opened for local artist Bill Deasy) and he didn't keep the crowds attention at all. I never thought of him as a Bruce wannabee (except for Clarence's sax solo on 'Lover') at all and you would be surprised that he does play many more gigs besides the MSB thing, solo and with another band (name escapes me).I know a girl who is involved with his merchandise. Yes, Stage One was the name of that place. Thanks Keith for the info I could not remember. Spekis confirmed it also. It would be nice to pull out some old videos of that place. Cool that you are on the cover Jeff, IIRC our webmaster Shel is on it also! I like talking about the old days it's fun but whether you were a fan back then or now it doesn't matter. I'm glad that Joe is still putting out good music these days for us to enjoy too.

I'm with Hank -- I'm sure they are all wonderful people and noted humanitarians and all that, but as a band, Michael Stanley's guys were nowhere near being in the same league as the ICHR. And it used to drive me crazy when people outside of Pittsburgh would say, "Iron City Houserockers -- they're like the Michael Stanley Band, right?" As for unusual Joe venues, nothing tops the rural, erm, charm of the Ribbit, way up in Butler, where we saw the post-ICHR Brick Alley Band one night a long time ago.

The 1st time I ever saw the Houserockers was my freshman year at PITT at the Student Union building. I believe it was in the spring of 1980 (A photo from this show was used on the back of "Have A Good Time."). I remember it was sold out so I got some gold construction paper and a black pen and used my artistic abilities to "recreate" a few tickets for myself and my buddy. The ticket taker never noticed the difference and now we're on the back of the album. I had the pleasure of attending the forementioned shows at the Stanley Theater. The MSB New Year's Eve show was the 1st time my wife, Karen (girlfriend at the time) saw the houserockers play live, but not the first time she ever saw them "play" (does anybody remember the apperarance on "Solid Gold"?) To this day, I still beleive that if they had played "Be My Friend" instead of "Friday Night", they would've made a better connection with the type of audience that regularly watched that show (I think it was about the only time I ever watched it myself). Who knows whether that would've changed the course of the band's popularity or not, but a very reliable source (Karen) says it probably would've caught her 17 year old musical ear moreso than "Friday Night" did at the time. Another place I used to go see the boys play quite regularly was Sunny ("Scummy") Jim's on Camp Horne Rd. in Bellevue/Avalon. (Their men's room gave the Decade's a run for the money if you know what I mean)! Lot's of great memories over the years though!

Tom, it's ironic you mention Michael Stanley. He was always a Bruce wannabe to me but in Cleveland they worship the ground he walks on. One time he sold out seven nights in a row at Blossom Music Center which honestly most acts alive couldn't do. He's a D.J. on WNCX in Cleveland now and will occasionally do "reunnion" type gigs. In the early days of the 80's, often people would compare the the ICH and MSB because they were both such huge regional acts with some good national press. I never understood it though because they were bubble gum compared to the original Iron City Houserockers. Joe once told me a humorous story about Michael Stanley being forced upon him one time during a recording of a track but Joe nixed that quickly. I'm not sure how Joe and Mike get along these days though but in my opinion, the Michael Stanley Band couldn't even roadie for the Iron City Houserockers.

I saw Joe solo with Dylan at the Amphitheater though I saw it from the railroad tracks. The stage faced Mt.Washington then. There must've been about 50 of us until a Conrail truck rolled by. Everybody ran until they realized it was just the railroad, then they came back and opened the coolers. My fondest ICHR show was at the Stanley Theater, though it wasn't with J.Geils. Joe opened for Michael Stanley there on New Year's Eve 1982. I met my wife in the front row there and we have been inseparable ever since that night. We actually danced to Auld Lang Syne(sp?)on the stage with about 30 other fans.

Gena - I think the place on Rt 22 was called "Stage One" or "Stage 1". It used to be the Cattleman's Restaurant, hence the big steer out front.

Does the Roberto Clemente Bridge count as a landmark? We saw you there too.

I was in attendance at the ICHR gig at the Stanley Theatre when they opened for J.Geils Band. We were lucky enough to be first in line and scored the orchestra pit and were so proud of our boys playing on the 'big stage'. I was a huge Dan Marino fan back then and when he, Tommy Flynn and some other Pitt footballers sat next to me I could have died lol (they always showed up at the Decade too). I know I have the ticket stub (will have to look at the date) but I remember 'Saints and Sinners' being one of the highlights of the evening. Since we were so close I took in one of those small Kodak cameras and thought for sure I had scored some great shots. Well the whole roll of film superimposed onto each other and the pictures were of all the ICHR and JGeils Band on one lol. I was bummed. It was so great to see them on a stage where I had seen Springsteen in 78 and folks like Petty and Mellencamp perform. Remember the Holiday House and a show or two when Joe and Bill opened for SSJ too. I was a Decade regular when the ICHR performed most every Friday night. As some of you remember there really is no explaining how exciting it was back then when most bands were playing covers. We used to wear our 'Pump An Iron' sweatshirts (my Dad owned a local distributor and his main brand was Iron City of course) even though the song was 'Pumpin' Iron'. I also attended an all star local benefit for the Steelworkers I believe but don't recall the date. Just found the poster from it at my mom's house so I'll check it. And what was the place on Route 22 with the cow? out front and the mirror ball inside with the low ceiling? That place was crazy when the ICHRers played there. I'm thinking Joe may have closed that place too ;-)
