A REVIEW OF THE STONE PONY SHOW POSTED ON LIVE DAILY: Last November, at LOD, the Grushecky set didn't impress me. He shared the stage with too many non-band members and did far too little of his own material. Combined with Bob Benjamin slealth advertising about Bruce, the experience left a bad taste in me. Fortunately, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers expunged that memory last night. Other than not performing one of their standards ("Talkin with the King"), they ripped into song after song. They played about two hours (from 11:20 - 1:20) and had the place jumping. The crowd had built up some for Joe's set, but it clearly wasn't packed as much as it has been in the past. Too bad, as lots of folks missed a good set. Joe was even nice enough to bring about a dozen young females from the crowd up onto the stage for the LaBamba/Twist & Shout encore closer to vastly improve upon the looks of the self-admitted ugliest band. Prior to JG&HR;, The Matt O'Ree Band performed about a dozen songs. Matt is a gifted guitar player and handles his blues-flavored setlist very well. He did lose me in one of those 20-minute guitar solos and his bass player needs to ease up on the volume of his instrument, but Matt showed some promise. I suspect he will be heard from again. We arrived in the middle of LP's set. They were interesting, which is another way of saying "I'm 50 and they're in their early 20s, so I'm not sure if I have the time or inclination to learn more about them." In any event, some of the songs showed some grit and the sparse crowd definitely showed their enthusiasm for the band. Sorry, didn't arrive in time to see Jon Caspi. As Clint Eastwood once uttered on screen, "a man's got to know his limitations."

Great night at the Pony! It was well worth the road trip! The Hotel wasn't all that bad. REDRUM.

Bring your own Frankie--it's real hard to find in Jersey although Rolling Rock is very plentiful. And good luck to the HR's--make the Pony sizzle.

Please make sure you ask about the gift shop though. It's an allusion to the shining. If you look back in the guestbook this is a running thing for years. I stayed at the Berkely last year and many times before. You'll be fine.

Kath--you know i love Jersey. Hey you can walk across that little bridge into Ocean Grove or drive into Deal and it knocks your socks off. Besides, I love the Pony and A.P. so it's cool. It's The Shining that i can't stop shaking my head about.
