WOW! Great post, MULK!!! Between the video teaser and your heartfelt, sincere impressions of the new songs, we're more pumped than ever awaiting Joe's new CD (as well as the long awaited documentary)!!! Your comments about what Joe's music has meant to you over the years really struck a chord with me. I still remember hearing "Hideaway" on DVE one night back in '79 (and a few weeks later hearing "Love So Tough" on WYDD-anybody remember that station?) and being hooked for life on what I couldn't believe was coming right out of my hometown instead of some far off city. I started going to see the ICHR's as often as possible because I really figured that it wouldn't be long before they hit the "bigtime" and left Pittsburgh for bigger things. One night when I wasn't able to get by the doorman at the Decade (fake ID didn't fool him that night), I just stood outside the side entrance for four hours just to listen to the show (sort of like the character in Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero"). Over the years, although I wanted so badly for Joe Grushecky to breakout on a national level and be heard by the masses, it obviously never happened. Joe's music has never failed to excite my senses and I just couln't (and still can't) understand how others couldn't see and hear what I was seeing and hearing. I guess, from a selfish point of view, the one good thing about the Houserockers never quite "hitting the bigtime", was that it gave us a chance to see Joe playing at the local bars all these years. Let's hope that maybe this one will be the one that finally gets Joe the recognition he deserves, not just in Pittsburgh, but everywhere. But even if it doesn't, I'm sure that I'll be savoring another musical masterpiece and thanking God that I was chosen to be one of the "lucky ones" that have been along for the journey.

Very nice review of Joe's new cd Mulk. I could not agree more. I'll keep saying it, in my opinion, it's his best. My kids are a little younger but it is neat for me to see them getting interested in music as I did at a young age. I echo your thoughts on their upcoming journey. Music played a very important part in my life and got me through some real tough times. I too hope my kids find music that is equally as meaningful as I found. With the state of music today, it's gonna be tough to find somthing worthwhile. hey, you never know maybe the music of Joe, Bruce and others will be the music they choose. My fingers are crossed! The documentary is progressing nicely. It is a daunting task to PROPERLY document someone's life who has done so much. Daunting, but fun and exciting. I have been saying through the entire process that my only goal is to make something that Joe can say he is proud of when finished. I hope it's something that Joe's fans can be proud of,too.

Good Stuff Mark, wish Mick Taylor would have stayed on with the stones instead of hiring Ron Wood. He really rebounded after that Hyde Park disaster

...I missed Buddy in Lubbock, Elvis in Memphis and John in Liverpool. Then in 1979, I heard a sound that was made right in my hometown...and it was Joe Grushecky. From that point on, I was hooked on the music that John Grushecky’s son created. I know, a little grandiose – but, the point is, this man’s music has been very important to the region in which it was born for a long time. A couple Saturday nights ago, I broke away from my wife and children and my little piece of paradise on the side of a Maryland mountain, to reconnect with that sound that has run like a thread through my entire adult life. The live experience with Joe has never failed to put everything in my life into perspective. In a small club in Dormont, before a modest audience comprised of middle aged as well as barely legal patrons, Joe Grushecky played his heart out - as he always has - creating sounds that once again took me back to that 16 year old kid searching for a meaningful existence. It struck me that my son, who just turned 13, will be embarking on that very same search. I just pray that he finds something as meaningful as this music to guide him towards what is truly important in this world. Joe honored me with a preview of his brand new – soon to be released – CD. Now, for those who have read my reviews of past releases, it will be difficult to not sound redundant with yet another enthusiastic, praise filled commentary on the new collection of songs. As with the classic ICH recordings, and the first three post-ICH CDs - for the past decade now, the prolific songwriting of Joe has been matched only by the superior quality of these compositions. I thought Coming Home, equaled, if not surpassed, it’s critically acclaimed predecessor American Babylon. Fingerprints broke new ground for Joe stylistically and marked his first full CD recorded with musicians other than the Houserockers. I found True Companion to be another solid effort. In my humble estimation, the new CD is the most focused, no fat presentation of songs yet. As I drove the turnpike in the wee hours of the night, the new sounds took me to an even higher level of appreciation of where this musical journey has lead Joe and his fans. I can’t overstate how incredible these new songs made me feel upon my initial, second, third and fourth...listening. The similar themes of the importance of family, friends and a purposeful life run through the disk. However, it is the intensity that is felt that has driven this one to new heights – even with the exceedingly high expectations I have for Joe’s music. More than ever, I believe a unique gift has been bestowed on Joe and we are the fortunate recipients of his talent. These songs will touch you in new ways. At this point I should not be surprised, but the man has done it again. Get pumped for this one!!! Also, Flat Broke Productions’ new Grushecky project will blow everyone away. This production team is doing some incredible work. It is a heavy responsibility to document such a daunting body of work. I’m certain a long overdue vehicle to get Joe’s music out in documentary form has finally been found. Faithful fans have long waited for Joe to receive just recognition and rewards for his music, however it’s time to realize the glory can be found in the journey – which we are in the midst of right now. Enjoy and appreciate every live performance by a true Pittsburgh rock n’ roll legend – and soon that description shouldn’t need to be proceeded by the area he has lived and worked so hard in his entire life. I’m prouder than ever to be a fan and friend of this man. More to come on the brilliant new CD by Joe Grushecky...
