WOW! What a night, what a show, 5,000 or more people. Toooooo much fun! Joe u kicked butt, Ric was in superb form and little Joe the vocals sounded really crisp. We need more of these concerts. South Hills really came out for the HR's.

Another insightful post, MULK! It's always a pleasure hearing your take on all things Pittsburgh (The Houserockers in particular). Your comparisons of many of Joe's song titles and the Big Ben situation was great! (Of course, we can laugh about it now.) I couldn't help but start thinking about some of the great old dives that I've seen Joe and many other Pittsburgh bands play over the years and had to add my two cents here. How about Sunny ("Scummy") Jim's, Excuses, The Upstage, Someplace Else, The Evergreen Hotel, (and a few nicer venues) Graffiti's, 2001 (Hampton), and one who's name escape's me (something like "Backstage Charlie's"(?) on Rte.22 in Monroeville. Like you, living away from the 'Burgh makes one long for those times and places even more. Going to PITT during the early 80's was an incredible experience for somebody who really loved the local music scene, especially that "little bar on the corner of Atwood and Sennott"! I had to chuckle when you mentioned "living there Thursday through Sunday" because I certainly did that a few times myself, but I actually had a college buddy who literally LIVED above the Decade for about 3 months (free music every night, but not much sleep!) Can't wait for the new CD, keep the reviews coming! Also can't wait for the documentary (any timeframe on that?). Thanks again for posting your thoughts, impressions and Pittsburgh music memories, always a joy to read.

Chickie - Nothing I would have liked better than to have caught Joe and Marc in beautiful dahntahn Pittsburgh, while playing hooky from work. Unfortunately, Maryland is a bit far for an “extended lunch hour.” Hope there was a nice crowd in attendance. I’m thinking of taking a mid-week break for the Auggie’s show though. The wife is on break from teaching and I love to catch the Houserockers in any place called a “roadhouse.” No band plays better roadhouse rock. Anybody ever been to this venue? Now that Big Ben seems to be on the way to recovery, I was thinking of a few Joey G songs with related titles that might have been appropriate requests for the Mellon Square gig (tongue firmly planted in cheek)…Out of My Head, Ain’t Goin’ Down, Unsafe at any Speed, What Gives, The Shape I’m In…(more optimistically) Lucky Man, Everything’s Going to Work Out Right, Feeling Better Now…(for Bengals, Ravens and Browns fans) Idiot’s Delight…and, lastly, Have A Good Time But Get Out Alive!!! I’m lovin’ the music talk, especially from the “old days.” Miss all those old Pittsburgh rock/punk clubs - Mancini’s Lounge, Raspberry Rhino, Electric Banana, Swissvale’s Fat City, some old rock palace on the corner of Atwood and Sennott, and a dozen other dives that were frequented by the best rock ‘n blues bands to ever come out of the ‘Burgh. Can’t get that Pittsburgh Sound out of my head. Did any city in America have four bandleaders like Joe, Frankie Czuri, Norman Nardini and Billy Price? Anyone remember living at the Decade from Thursday thru Sunday and seeing the Houserockers, Silencers, Tigers and Keystone Rhythm Band on consecutive nights? It was a good time to be young (pre-crack, pre-Columbine, pre-9.11, pre-Iraq, post-Viet Nam). Just sent more incredible footage from Grushecky shows, including the last ICH performance at the Decade closing in ’95, to the filmmakers who are going to convey Joe’s story to the world. Look out Sundance and Cannes! Maybe we can get some material on a bonus DVD for all the faithful to enjoy. It’s been a wild ride. Fun doing some research on my favorite pastime. Anybody want to hear about the new tunes? The fresh material consists of a “baker’s dozen” batch of guitar driven rockers, up tempo party songs and thought provoking ballads written as only Joe can. No teaser. I’ll start providing some insight into a very special CD right here, with one of my early favs… “Safe At Home” (9:23)…Just beautiful. I heard an original version at the defunct Nick’s Fat City on 03.22.2003, the week bombing commenced on Iraq. At that time, the song was titled “In Case All Hell Breaks Loose” and Joe performed solo in acoustic format prior to the band taking the stage. It was a scary week. Joe’s lyrics, quiet presentation and presence provided a known comfort to this concerned father. The “Safe At Home” version pours out that very raw emotion a parent has for their child when they are placed in harm’s way – through searing guitar solos that grab you by the guts and convey this intense feeling of dread and helplessness. Here we are nearly three decades past and we may be seeing “Mrs. Rizzo’s Charley”, from “Saints and Sinners” before the aftermath of war. This song is a prayer and a pleading to spare a father’s son from a cruel fate that is visiting our country’s sons and daughters in a foreign land on a daily basis once again. “….hold on everybody, hold on to your lives, hold on to your families, ain’t it good to be alive…”
