I'm not the biggest Clarks fan, but they've got some good songs I like. And I've seen some great live performances. As far as Povertyneck Hillbillies, well, I'll agree to disagree. This "new country" kind of sound, seemingly brought into vogue by such artists as Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, and countless other cowboy-hat wearing, crappy guitar players-is what killed an entire genre of real country music. No one should consider Povertyneck Hillbillies a true representation of country music. And that "lite country" stuff just ain't my thing. Gimme Dead Flowers or Gram Parsons any day!

Every song can't be written by Bob Dylan, Joe G or Bill Deasy or any other of great songwriters. It's all an opinion. While the Clarks songwriting may not be up to those songwriters, the songs are catchy or more poppy if you will. When you see these guys live they give 100% at a show and are the nicest guys you will ever meet. Rob James is great on the guitar, I don't feel their studio releases do him justice.

I think we folks who follow the HRers are a minority. We want to think about the songs and pay attention to the lyrics. Most folks use music as a background distraction, therefore the songwriting isn't what they are looking for. It's more about it being something they can hum or dance to. The Clarks provide that for a lot of folks and in a perfect world they would be heard by the masses. Instead they are the top band in Pittsburgh and on DVE in case you haven't noticed because folks of all ages follow them. Not a bad thing imo, sometimes you just need to 'Let It Go' as they say on the title cut of one of their CDs. It's all a matter of opinion, if you don't like them, don't listen. But to say they suck isn't very p.c. You will not hear me say any music ever sucks even if it's not my taste.

The key word here, Dave, is 'judge'. Many people disagree with your opinion of The Clarks. I am not fond of their last two releases, but still enjoy their older songs and will root for them. They do, after all, represent Pittsburgh, the same as Joe and the Povertyneck Hillbillies, and other talented musicians and bands too numerous to mention.

I consider myself a pretty good judge of music and I got news for you Mulk "The Clarks Suck" talk about weak songwriting and guitar mush.

Just received and viewed the new Clarks DVD. It is a very well done film of the band’s concert performance in December, 2005 at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale, PA. A nice documentary of the band is included in the bonus features. The Clarks are a Pittsburgh band that was formed about a decade after the ICH began their run. Like ICH, they cut their teeth at the legendary Decade. The Clarks are four fine musicians who have made good music for a while now and do well touring the country. Their biggest success has been an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman last year. In the documentary portion of the DVD, the band viewed their brief moment in the national spotlight as a victory for all the Western Pennsylvania bands and their fans. The Clarks’ Scott Blasey has expressed to me his love of Joe’s music and the man himself. Joe’s accomplishments in the music industry are an inspiration and guiding light for the band. Check out drummer, David Minarik clad in a “Decade” t-shirt = ode to Dom DiSilvio, the godfather of Pittsburgh rock.

…Happy birthday to the “nice” Beatle. He made it to 64. Unfortunately my two favorites did not.

Here’s another peek into the upcoming Grushecky disk – in honor of all those fathers out there in the Houserocker Nation. Happy Pop’s Day!

Father and Son (5:35)…A very strong ballad, with a family theme that Joe writes so well. The relationship between father and son is explored with a twist. This is no “Cats in the Cradle.” The importance of this bond is fully realized and appreciation is memorialized in this tribute to the lessons passed down from generation to generation. All fathers will be able to relate to viewing their relationship with their sons through their experience with their own fathers. At some point those ties have to be cut. “I remember how hard mom cried…I remember how hard it was to say goodbye…I remember thinking, now I’m really on my own.” However, the parental influence remains. The lyrics put it all in perspective, as the only thing we can control in this world is how we choose to relate to those close to us. “…I remember how you lived your life, how you treated the kids and your wife…some day our fathers all come to take us home.”

Lesson learned. I’m teaching my son all the dirty secrets of the world, in between teaching him chords. Happy Father’s Day John, Joe and someday Johnny.

Peace and Love

I'd certainly love to hit the Pony especially since the great Joe Durso is opening.

I generally don't visit states with smoking bans however. This will be a tough decision.
