Hmmm, This is what happens when I type quickly in between classes. I actually had to go back and re-read my posts - something I don't do when I post. I don't think I said anything bad about anything but I can see where people thought that was implied. What I meant was, you have to live with something for a while, before you realize if it's the best or not. I like many of you (probably) bought the new Dylan cd hearing all the great reviews in rolling stone et al. However I was quite disapointed. That was just my opinion about judging the cd too quickly not its quality. Hell I got an e-mail that said, "how dare I trash Fingerprints." I guess that was extrapolated from saying 2 cd's in row. I just wanted to make the point that you have to spend some time with the music before you can contextualize it in Joe's body of work. Initially I (and probably a lot of you) are just thrilled when an artist we like puts something out. You never know if someone is going to retire from recording (like Billy Joel) or start putting out crap (see Dylan, B 1980's) so my simple reaction is just to be thrilled it's out and doesn't suck. After spending some time with the release then it can be judged. As a matter of fact the more I listen to it the more I like it. Safe at Home is my current favorite track fyi.

"So to Zeke, Jimmy and others, it's okay if you don't dig it as much as some others. Having a difference of opinion is what makes the world go round. I'd suggest clearing your mind of the past and putting the CD on" I don't think anyone said they didn't dig it as much as others. I think the point was that this record is as strong as any record Joe has put out...No surprise. I'm not one to crown something as "the best" just because it's the latest and greatest. And just because someone refuses to do so doesn't mean they are "living in the past." I think we can all agree this is a great record by Joe G. But don't trivialize what is a fine body of work...This record could not have happened without the pieces of the puzzle that happened before it.

Being a longtime fan such as Shel I am going to agree with him. And remember Shel is on the cover of HAGT so he knows ;-)I can't pick a favorite but right now besides the obvious tunes (Searching and Safe) I am hooked and I mean hooked on 'The Other Shoe' and 'Don't Forget Where You're Coming From'. This is Joe's best work in terms of songwriting, arranging, singing and just plain passion. There is not one song that I have skipped yet. Whether your favorite CD is HAGT or BOTB there's no argument that those are excellent works but that was a different era a different time, I would be bored to tears if Joe did another CD exactly like those. Sure I love them and listen to them occaisionally but I'm more about the present and the future and only like to visit the past. I think the difference is that this is a JOE G CD. Not a Houserocker CD. A total Joe CD and a damn good one. Most artists at this time in their life can only hope to release a CD as complete as this one is. Joe has shared his talents with us and pushed the bar higher than he has in many years. So to Zeke, Jimmy and others, it's okay if you don't dig it as much as some others. Having a difference of opinion is what makes the world go round. I'd suggest clearing your mind of the past and putting the CD on...lose your self in the lyrics and the excellent guitar work of Joe and Ricky and really LISTEN to it. Listen to a talented songwriter who's sharing a part of himself with us. I for one am damn glad that he has.

"never be enough time" should be the lead track for a movie soundtrack. Anyone want to write the screenplay?

Nothing Without You (which sounds like it could have been on Rock and Real) may be the best song on the record. I dig Bruce's live version of "Code" more than this studio cut. But A Good Life and Searching for My Soul are real standouts. A great record, top to bottom.

I respectfully disagree with you Zeke,... having listened to Joe or the HRs since 1977, I think this is clearly his best work to date, with the only album that may rival it being "Have a good time"...but that is done in a different context. This is the 1st work from Joe that I've heard that I don't bore of any particular songs, usually there are a handful of songs that I don't really care for but this CD doesn't have any. I believe that it is the most approachable CD that he has done to date. that's how I see it... I think the next question is what song is the 2nd best on the CD, after Code of Silence. I would personally vote for the title track.

I've been making a valient effort to listen to more of "AGL", but I've been on this "American Babylon" kick...song after song...hit after hit....just a phenomonal CD. I mean, I've always liked it...it just really sort of grew on me lately.
