Political HR Fan
It is obvious to this fan, that Joe very plainly criticizes the weak leadership of this once great country.
And, it's even more obvious, the staunch conservatives will never admit how much a failure "W" truly is. Let's face it, rock and roll and politics have ALWAYS gone hand in hand, and Joe's songs define this process.

Yep you nailed it Shel and what about the part with the one horse open sleigh. Why not many horses, why the discrimination to the horses of the world. It's all about oats, i mean oil, oh whatever. You know, we're not the only country with horses--god knows France's horses are more important than ours. For the record though, Lake P. wasn't written for this album but hey, why let the facts get in the way of an agenda. Guess there isn't enough Joe G. happenings now to discuss--so pull out the politics card.

Except for the fact that Jingle Bells doesn't mention the president. Joe very pointedly has addressed the current administration in song, on this record and others. So when you look at it that way Shel, it's not really a stretch at all.

Shel
leave it to Mark to find a way to bash the president in the middle of a good CD

you are suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome & would find a way to bash him in Jingle Bells

Much has been written about "A Good Life," a stellar record, and a powerful addition to the Grushecky catalogue. It's obvious Joe had a great time recording this record, and quite a few of the songs getting some press are fun, good-spirited rockers. But for my money, it's great to see Joe still writing the pissed-off, social and political commentary that pervades this record. The dissatisfaction and outrage against the President and his administration is evident throughout this record. "Safe at Home" "Searching for My Soul" and "Lake Ponchartrain" remind us that these are not easy times. They also remind us to never stop questioning what our so-called "leaders" are doing...even if it's in the name of "national security." (Fear is a great motivator, right GW)?
As Jack Black says in "School of Rock" (my son's favorite movie): "If you wanna rock, you gotta get mad at the man!"

Great show Friday (as you can probably tell from all the previous posts)! We really enjoyed hearing all the new songs performed live. It's hard to pick a favorite when all the songs are so good. The crowd was great (except for a little too much chatter during the "best ballad Joe's ever done", Beauty Fades, but I guess we'll let that slide since overall the crowd was very into it and very appreciative. I think Joe should've paused for a moment after playing Code Of Silence (rather than going directly into I Will Not Let My Spirit Fall) because I think the audience was about to burst into an extremely loud and lengthy ovation in appreciation of hearing their current favorite song, only to be "cut off", so to speak, when the guys went right into "Spirit". Joe, I know it's not your style, but go ahead and savor the moment while you can, you definitely deserve it! It was also pretty cool to mingle with the band and the guys from DVE after the show (including Steve Hanson!) and I have to say that in our brief encounter with Johnny G., he really struck us as a polite young man with a good head on his shoulders. Now we know why Joe is so proud of him! Also, I didn't realize how much of a hit my "Decade" t-shirt (from the reunion shows at Moondogs) was going to be. I figured one or two folks might appreciate it, but it was almost overwhelming the constant comments and compliments I got on it. Anyone interested might try checking with Moondog's to see if they still have any left, you never know. Once again, great night, great show, great time! Thanks everybody!
