I dunno, I guess that I'm an Iron City Houserockers and Houserockers fan. I like the new stuff, but I can't get my fix unless I hear some of the old stuff... Sure , we need to progress, but...

Great setlist from the Pony. How did the Jersey crowd respond to the new stuff? Hank I will say...that Boston '81 show is killer. Would have made one helluva officially relased live record.

I don't want to be part of the Gena/Mark feud--they can handle their opinions on their own but i do want to clarify a few things from my previous post.

In no way do i dispute anything about Joe's talents or why i log on to this site at least a few times a week--it's because of my love and respect for Joe's music and career. And in no way was i dogging Meg's post or her opinion as much as i was trying to emphasize that the ICH's were the right band for the right time and they knocked me on my ass and made me a fan. Hell, i had no choice --they were speaking to me in only a way that Springsteen could but even different. And as much as I love Bruce, (there's no swamps in western Pa. or eastern Ohio-LOL) it was Joe who knew about the coal mines and the steel mills and the world that i grew up in. I found reasonance in that--i found meaning.

My point is more abundantly that the ICH's are almost sadly forgotten as a band and are rarely mentioned in this forum. Sure the albums are always getting talked about but the crew that joined Joe and Art when they formed this thing just seems under appreciated to me. And why? I think i hit on it before as the evolution of Joe's bands progressed into continual forms of excellence. I mean is there a better drummer than Joffo in Pittsburgh? And Bernie--for god's sake, he played with James Brown. You got little Joe who worked his way up from a sound guy into a force behind a keyboard. And as Danny knows, Billy Toms is one kick-ass guitar player who every time i saw him at the Stone Pony--people would come up and tell me--you're right, he's great. The point is that the ICH's are almost forgotten about because of the immense talents of the latter day HR's.

There's no shortage of praise on my part for Joe. Sometimes I actually seem to restrain myself on my posts because i don't want to appear as someone who has no objectivity, I am well aware of Joe and where he fits into my musical influence and sphere. I just can't be a complete homer all of the time.

So if Meg feels slighted by my post, she has taken me wrong in the respect that it wasn't against her opinion--it was in mutual respect for that first band, the ones who should had been household names in rock and roll.

If you own the FM broadcast from a snowy night in Boston from December of '81--put it on sometime again soon. Go back and listen because maybe you're immune from where rock and roll was then. The after effects of disco was still lingering--many rock critics thought the Stones were starting their downward trend, Bonzo and Keith Moon were gone and radio was heading towards new wave and non-American acts. Other than Bruce, for me rock was stagnant. The signature sound of Marc Reisman's harp and Joe Grushecky's voice and plea to bust out was rock and roll ecstatsy to me. Throw in some blues, some attitude and some bottles of Iron City and the ICH's became the perfect anecdote. Other than the Jukes, is there really ever been a bar band you would put in the same class? You people that lived in the Decade back then have to remember the synergy that they had. Again, it was the right band for the right time and i don't want them to be forgotten or slighted. I'm sure Meg wasn't doing that but Gena i wasn't "not" getting it either--i just want the original guys to be put into their proper perspective. Joe is the the glue to everything, the straw that stirs the drink, the rock and roll conscience and voice of da burgh but the ICH's were an unlucky band that deserved so damn much more for their talents.

Now..does anybody have a report from the pony tonight?

"I really don't care what you think or if you agree with me."

Really? Cause it sure sounds like you do...you just used up a couple hundred words in a post directed at me. Thanks!!!!!

ALL bands have different chemistry, that's why they are DIFFERENT. I'm tired of you spinning my posts into something they are not, I never said that anyone was clueless. You are suppossed to be so liberal minded but when anyone disagrees with you, you attack them. Since when did you become the official spokesperson? As I recall you weren't even on this forum a few years ago. A forum is a place to give your opinion but quite frankly you are the reason that most folks including myself do not post. Go put on your Rolling Stones records, compare every Joe song to one of theirs and remember what a great band they USED to be. Oh but that's right you don't live in the past.

People tend to remember things as they were not, as in that was the greatest or the best. I like to visit the past not live there and believe me this is coming from someone who totally dug that period in my life. The ICHR were more about the time, being young,(I was barely 21) and the Decade. They were angry times everything was different. You can't relive the past. I believe that the most recent version of the HRers was just as good in their own way. That's all I'm trying to say but it doesn't matter because you will not read what I've said. You will still say those shows were better than the current. That's fine that's your opinion. But I'm entitled to mine.

Joe has a brand new CD out and you are talking about the 1980's...again. I want to read and talk about what Joe is doing now. I should learn to keep my thoughts to myself. I really don't care what you think or if you agree with me. Please stop turning my posts around into something I did not say. I will now go back again to lurking. Carry on.

The original ICHR had DIFFERENT chemistry than any version that came after. No disrespect to any musicians that came after, because the entire history is rich. But of the ICHR, Joe himself is quoted as saying "WE invented something." Not "me", but "we" meaning the whole band. So yeah, there was something special. And appreciating that does not mean someone lives in the past. But apparently only Gena gets it and the rest of us are clueless.

Thank you Meg, someone FINALLY gets it! No disrespect to you Hank I value your opinon but...I too started back in the days of the ICHR and was devasted by their breakup. I traveled an hour into the city every single Friday night to go to the Decade. Those nights were very special for a lot of reasons. Once I got over the breakup I too realized this. None of the bands INCLUDING the ICHR would have existed without Joe G. Sure they are all talented musicians but without Joe it's not the same. Do you think that band had more chemistry than the current band or the Brick Alley Band? No.

Joe surrounds himself with talented people always whether it was Eddie Britt or Bill Toms. IMO Joe could put out any number of similar CDs to those ICHR CDs but how many artists can put out an intimate CD like 'A Good Life'?

The bottom line is that it's all about Joe Grushecky. It doesn't matter WHO he plays with because it's his writing singing and his spirit in the music.

So go ahead and tell me I've trivilized the old stuff (I have not and do enjoy the old songs). Things change and times change and the ICHR were all about the times back then. I prefer to see what Joe G has in store for me today. So stop reliving the past. It's ok to appreciate it but please move on.

Meg look me up at the show I owe you a beer ;-)

Nice article about Joe and "A Good Life" CD in today's Asbury Park Press, in the Jersey Life section p3.
